UN: Independent Prisoner Complaints System is Essential to the Prevention of Torture and Ill-treatment

The UN Committee Against Torture, issuing the concluding observations of its first examination of Ireland, has expressed “deep concern” at the level of overcrowding in the prison system and called for urgent action to end slopping out and to establish an independent system for investigating prisoner complaints. Suspected TB outbreak in Irish prisons

Dozens of prisoners and prison officers at Cloverhill and Wheatfield prisons in Dublin and the Midlands prison in Portlaoise have been diagnosed with TB, reports Fiachra Ó Cionnaith in the 'Irish Examiner'. Read more

Latest prison figures

There were 4,433 people in prison custody in Ireland on 22nd June 2011; this is an increase of 66% since 2000, when there were 2,919 men and women held in Irish prisons. Read more
