IPRT welcomes additional funding for youth justice initiatives

IPRT warmly welcomes the statement issued yesterday (5th May 2016) by Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald TD that an additional €1.57m is to be provided for youth justice initiatives from the Dormant Accounts Fund under the 2016 Action Plan. Read more

Strong Focus on the Rights of Adults and Children in Prisons and Places of Detention at Ireland’s 2nd UPR

More than 30 countries at Ireland’s 2nd Universal Periodic Review raised concerns and made recommendations to Ireland on the human rights of adults and children in prisons and places of detention, with many explicitly calling on Ireland to finally ratify the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture. Ireland supports broad range of prison-related recommendations made at the 2nd Universal Periodic Review

In the draft report of Ireland’s Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review, released on the 13th of May, Ireland has stated its support for all prison-related recommendations made by its peers with the exception of one recommendation, which it will review further. Read more
