The figures show that those members of society who go to prison all too often have low literacy and numeracy levels. A new report launched today in the UK seeks to remedy this somewhat; ‘Doing Things Differently’ targets the skills deficit that many prisoners experience and formulates a plan of action to provide offenders with marketable skills which can improve quality of life and introduce them to the jobs market on release.
Without the necessary skills and training, offenders and ex-offenders are frequently excluded from opportunities; the report seeks to introduce prescriptions for education and training courses at the sentencing stage, all working towards reducing re-offending by giving ex-offenders viable options and a brighter future.
