An article by Kevin Doyle in the Herald has cited the findings of a 2008 recidivism study.
While the figures are not new, they do remain shocking, and a damning indictment of Ireland's commitment to the reintegration prisoners.
The UCD study measured rates of re-offending and re-imprisonment for four years following the release of prisoners. By the end of the fourth year, 49.2 per cent of offenders had been convicted and received new prison sentences.
Such figures make the forthcoming IPRT Report on the Reintegration of Offenders hugely significant.
