The Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) held a free event as part of

Culture Night, Friday 24th September, 2010

‘The Auld Triangle Walk’

Auld Triangle 1

The walking tour began in the shadow of Mountjoy Prison where experts in the field of prison history and criminology kept us intrigued, as well as entertained, with a unique insight into crime and punishment in Ireland – past & present!

Historian Tim Carey spoke on the night. Tim wrote Mountjoy: The Story of a Prison and is Heritage Officer for Dun Laoighaire-Rathdown Council. He is also the author of Croke Park: A History. The group also heard from criminologist Johnny Connolly, as well as prison policy expert Dr. Mary Rogan.

With our expert guides, the plan was to wind our way through the streets of Old Dublin to explore the Debtors Prison, Green Street Court House, King’s Inns, and the Four Courts. Although we diverged somewhat from route and script (!) it was a great event.

Our work is supported by

Respect for rights in the penal system with prison as a last resort.
