22nd October 2010

A key document, presented by the Inspector of Prisons, Judge Michael Reilly, to the Minister for Justice and Law Reform on 29th July 2010 was published on the Dept of Justice website today.

In The Irish Prison Population - an examination of duties and obligations owed to prisoners, the Inspector of Prisons clearly sets out "in clear and unambiguous terms the type of accommodation, the type and level of services and the regimes (including prisoner safety) that we as a country are obliged to provide for prisoners having regard to our international and domestic obligations and acknowledged best practice."
