Writing in today's edition of the Irish Examiner, Michael Clifford picks up on issues around sentencing discussed at the IPRT Annual Lecture 2012, including consistency in sentencing (and perceived inconsistencies), mandatory sentencing, transparency around decision-making, engagement with the general public and the media, and more.
Detailing the work of the Sentencing Council of England & Wales, Michael Clifford goes on to propose: "The establishment of a body similar to Britain’s Sentencing Council could, at the very least, increase confidence in the system and lead to greater consistency."
