Senator Ivana Bacik has long been a member and supporter of IPRT, and is a former Board Member of IPRT.
Ivana was re-elected in April 2011 to the Seanad on the Dublin University panel. She is leader of the Labour group in the Seanad, and Deputy Leader of Seanad Éireann. She is a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality, and the Sub-Committee on Penal Reform. In March 2013, Ivana authored the Justice Committee’s Report on Penal Reform, which was accepted unanimously by the cross-party committee.

Ivana is the Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology and Penology at Trinity College Dublin (previously held by Mary Robinson and President Mary McAleese). She is a Senior Lecturer and also a Fellow of Trinity College (elected in 2005), and a practising barrister.
Ivana has lectured widely in Europe on legal, social and human rights issues. She has been active in many human rights campaigns with a European dimension, most recently the movement against the war in Iraq and the Irish Social Forum. She is an initiator of the Law Scholarships Scheme providing access to College for students from disadvantaged schools.
Among her many publications, Ivana was co-author of Crime and Poverty in Ireland and was a contributor to the leading Irish criminological text, Criminal Justice in Ireland (O’Mahony, ed, 2002). She was co-editor of the Irish Criminal Law Journal until 2003.
