The Mental Health Foundation's recent report 'Losing Track of Time', explores the difficulties with dementia among a growing population of older male prisoners. In particular, the report compares current approaches taken in different English-speaking countries, and in addition makes recommendations for best practice in this challenging area. An overall context is given in the report around the difficulty of treating dementia in a closed correctional environment, in prisons designed to house younger prisoners. Interestingly, the report highlights the dichotomy between wider awareness of dementia, government funding for treatment degenerative cognitive conditions and, conversely, government cutbacks in health and other programmes for prisoners.
