CSO: Statistics on recidivism among offenders placed under probation or community service orders in 2008

11th December 2013

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has provided figures for recidivism rates for those who were placed under Community Service Orders and Probation Orders in 2008 ('2008 cohort'). Also included is a comparison table with figures for the 2007 cohort.

The CSO produced these statistics through data obtained from the records of Irish criminal justice agencies (Garda Síochána and Probation Service).

In welcoming the CSO study, Minister Shatter (Defence, Justice & Equality) pointed out that although a recidivism rate within three years of 41% was too high, it was an improvement on the figures for 2007. He also hoped for a further reduction in recidivism rates in future studies following on from changes he has made to the Community Service Scheme.
