Joint Irish Prison Service & Probation Service Strategic Plan 2015-2017

18th May 2015

The Irish Prison Service and Probation Service have published their joint strategic plan for the years 2015 to 2017.

"The Irish Prison Service and the Probation Service jointly strategise their approach to offender management and rehabilitation from pre to post imprisonment in order to reduce re offending and improve prisoner outcomes."

  • Both agencies set out their primary goal as being improving public safety, by reducing re offending.
  • In their strategic action plan to promote social inclusion, the agencies commit to respond to the needs of women prisoners and pursue a dedicated approach to working with women offenders in the community
  • The agencies also commit to ensuring sentenced prisoners are assisted in their rehabilitation, and community reintegration.

Announcing the Joint Strategy, Minister for Justice and Equality, Mrs Frances Fitzgerald said:

"The purpose of the joint strategy prepared by the Prison and Probation Services is to focus on interventions that encourage the development of a multi-agency problem solving approach. The second joint strategy builds on the work already under way reflecting the integrated approach to working with offenders by the two Services – work which is closely aligned to the focus of rehabilitation and reintegration contained in the report of the Penal Policy Review Group.”
