IPRT Annual Lecture 2013: "Solitary confinement: necessity, convenience or inhumanity?"

17th July 2013

Tuesday, 23rd July 2013

King’s Inns, Henrietta Street, Dublin 1

Dr. Sharon Shalev delivered the Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) 2013 Annual Lecture on the topic of: "Solitary confinement: necessity, convenience or inhumanity?" Judge Gerard Hogan of the Irish High Court chaired the event, and leading social justice campaigner Fr. Peter McVerry responded to the lecture, reflecting on his experience in seeing the effects of prolonged isolation on prisoners within Irish prisons.

Dr Sharon Shalev is Research Fellow at the Centre for Criminology at Oxford University, a Fellow of the Mannheim Centre for Criminology at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an Associate of the International Centre for Prison Studies (ICPS). She has been researching the use of solitary confinement for almost two decades, and has written extensively on the subject.

IPRT invited Dr Shalev to Dublin in order to draw attention to serious rights issues and concerns surrounding the detention of prisoners in Ireland on restricted regimes, including 23 hour lock up, for significant periods of time.

IPRT is very grateful to KOD Lyons for their sponsorship of the 2013 Annual Lecture.
