Writing in The Irish Times, Joe Humphreys examines the impact of solitary confinement - the practice of holding prisoners up to 23 hours a day in isolation, for reasons of protection or punishment - on prisoners' mental health. The article gives voice to three prisoners speaking about their experience of 'the pad'.
