IPRT's Executive Director Liam Herrick was interviewed on RTE's Drivetime radio programme (15th Aug 2012) in relation to the complexities of mandatory sentencing. While better sentencing transparency and accountability may necessitate improved guidelines in Ireland, Liam points out that mandatory sentences are a blunt instrument that internationally have not proven to reduce crime, but have serious implications for prison population growth.
Respect for rights in the penal system with prison as a last resort.
