Sunday Tribune: Governor Lonergan criticizes Thornton Hall plans
17th May 2010
This article by Al Bracken appeared in the Sunday Tribune on the 16th of May.
The outgoing governor of Mountjoy has stated that the proposed plans for the construction of Thornton Hall will hide the problem away. He has used the well known saying out of sight of of mind to reiterate the growing problems of the prison regime in Ireland.
His concerns are for the families and friends of those sentenced will not have easy access and that they have not been consulted about the proposed plans to build a super prison 14km outside of the city.
Governor Lonergan states that the conditions in Mountjoy are appalling and that alternatives need to be put in place. He believes that people can rehabilitate themselves given the proper support.
In another article in the same edition of the Sunday Tribune, Ken Foxe reports on protection regimes and serious overcrowding in cells.
