Parliamentary Question: Irish Prison Service

25th November 2003

100. Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans for the future of Fort Mitchell Prison, Spike Island. [28228/03]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): I refer the Deputy to my detailed contribution to the Adjournment debate, held in the House on 12 November 2003, regarding the future of Fort Mitchel Place of Detention. I also refer the Deputy to my replies to Question Nos. 397, 398 and 423 on 18 November 2003, on various related issues in regard to Fort Mitchel. As I have indicated in the House and outside, I do not want to close or mothball Fort Mitchel Place of Detention but I will have no option but to do so if agreement is not forthcoming from the Prison Officers' Association for the operation of prisons on an economically sustainable basis.
