Parliamentary Question: Juvenile Offenders

19th June 2003

20. Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of juvenile liaison officers in the Garda at the latest date for which figures are available; his plans to extend the scheme in view of the proven success of it in dealing with juvenile offenders; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17111/03]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are 93 juvenile liaison officers within the Garda Síochána. In addition, a superintendent is director of the Garda juvenile diversion programme, and two sergeants and two inspectors work with the programme.

I am further informed that the continuing human and other resource implications of the Children Act 2001, including JLO numbers, are the subject of review by the Garda Síochána.
