Parliamentary Question: Prison Accommodation

7th May 2003

609. Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress to date in implementing the decision to abolish padded cells within the prison service. [11409/03]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): Following detailed consultations within the Irish Prison Service, an implementation group was set up to determine the most appropriate design for the replacement of padded cells with new safety observation cells. I expect to be in a position to consider and decide on their recommendations very shortly.
