Parliamentary Question: Prison Closure

18th February 2003

416. Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans to close any further prisons in view of the closure of Shanganagh Prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4346/03]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): The decision to close the detention centre at Shanganagh Castle had regard to circumstances at that centre and did not have implications for other institutions in the prison system.

The operation of each of those institutions is being kept under continuing review in the interest of making best possible use of available resources through greater efficiencies and cost effectiveness.
