Parliamentary Question: Prison Education Service

31st January 2007

 421. Mr. Timmins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if a physical education teacher is employed at an institution (details supplied); if so, when this position was filled; the number of classes that have taken place since the appointment; the number of young offenders who attended; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2439/07]

Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell):  St. Patrick's Institution have acquired the services, on a part time basis, of two physical education teachers. The teachers will provide four sessions per week. It is anticipated that each session will be attended by approximately eight offenders. This arrangement commenced on Monday, 22 January, 2007 and four sessions were held in the first week of operation.
