Parliamentary Question: Prison Medical Service

7th May 2003

605. Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will make a statement on the threat posed by the failure of the prison doctors and the Irish prison service to reach an agreement on pay and working conditions. [12303/03]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): The Irish Medical Organisation has sought an increase in the salary of prison medical officers and other substantial changes to other pay elements and working conditions as set out in the common contract for prison medical officers. While these matters have been the subject of on-going discussions with the Irish Medical Organisation and the Irish Prison Service, it has not been possible to reach agreement in the matter to date. As the discussions are on going, I do not wish to make any further comment in the matter at this time.
