493. Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the medical or para-medical care which exists for those prisoners with personality disorders who become mentally ill. [7040/03]
Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): Prisoners with personality disorders who develop a mental illness while in prison have access to medical, nursing, psychiatric, and psychological services within the prison system. In some institutions, the incidence of such problems is insufficient to justify the provision of dedicated services. Where a prisoner detained in such an institution develops a mental illness, arrangements may be made for a temporary transfer to another prison where appropriate care can be provided. Mentally ill prisoners may also be transferred to the Central Mental Hospital, Dundrum, when it is indicated that in-patient treatment is required.
Respect for rights in the penal system with prison as a last resort.
