278. Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the medical and paramedical care which is available for those prisoners who are mentally ill for short term care and who may not require intensive psychiatric care. [8906/03]
Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): Prisoners with mental health problems have access to medical, nursing, psychiatric, and psychology services within the prison system. If in-patient treatment is necessary, prisoners may be transferred to the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum.
Respect for rights in the penal system with prison as a last resort.
