218. Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of prison spaces likely to be available in 2002; the extent to which this figure represents an increase or decrease on previous years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24044/02]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): The number of prison spaces currently available is 3,511. This represents an increase of over 1,200 spaces during the past five years.
