The Independent investigates: Mothers & Prison

17th September 2012

Britain has seen a dramatic rise in the numbers of women being imprisoned over the past 20 years. It now has the highest rate of female imprisonment in the EU. However, an often forgotten issue is that of prisoners who are also mothers, and the impact a custodial sentence can have on both mother and child.

During the week of 15-22 Sept 2012, the Independent newspaper ran a special 6-day investigation on mothers in prison. An editorial 'We risk creating the felons of the future' published on Saturday 22 Sept summarised the findings of the investigation. You can access the articles below.

IPRT will launch its new report on families of prisoners on 20th November 2012.
