Crime and Civilization: An Interview with Nils Christie

For Nils Christie the way in which a society delivers pain to its wrongdoers is the measure of civilization. He is a long-time critic of the "lock-'em-up-and-throw-away-the-key" approach to law and order that is now filling up prisons on both sides of the Atlantic. Christie has been an important influence on both Scandinavian prison policy and on prison reformers around the world. He spoke to Richard Swift in the August 1996 issue of New Internationalist Magazine.
