The Court Service Annual Report 2010 published today indicates that few juvenile offenders are receiving community service or community sentences. 22 young people received community service and two received other community sanctions in 2010. In contrast 221 were ordered to detention, a further 9 to part detention and 135 had detention dismissed. A further 327 received probation orders and 107 were to be returned to a higher court.
This picture indicates that detention is still being relied upon heavily in relation to young offenders and community based sanctions under-utilised. The overall number of juvenile offences also rose by 9% in 2010, however the number of defendants appearing in the Courts remained very similar (3,222 in 2009 and 3,221 in 2010).
