Irish Penal Reform Trust

IPRT AGM 2014 / 'Documenting the Inside'

23rd October 2014

The 2014 AGM of the Irish Penal Reform Trust took place on Wed, 22nd Oct 2014 in the Camden Court Hotel, Dublin 2.

There was a fantastic turnout for the AGM, demonstrating tremendous support for the aims and work of the organisation. A member-only exclusive followed the AGM.

Documenting the Inside

A conversation with film-makers Martha Moloney and Traolach Ó Buachalla

Following the AGM, IPRT hosted a conversation with Traolach Ó Buachalla and Martha Moloney, the director and producer respectively of two recent prison documentaries, Women on the Inside (Sept 2014), filmed over a year in the Dóchas Centre, and the award-winning Life on the Inside (Feb 2013), filmed in Wheatfield Prison and Shelton Abbey Open Prison.

Martha and Traolach spoke to IPRT members about the process and their experiences in creating these hard-hitting prison documentaries, which have played a crucial role in showing the realities of prison to Irish audiences.

The conversation was led by Lynsey Black, PhD candidate at Trinity College Dublin, lecturer, and all round penal-reform buff (not to mention former IPRT intern in 2010). Previous research by Lynsey includes a cultural criminological exploration of the media and crime, specifically the reporting around offending women.

A few small technical difficulties aside (a temperamental projector), the conversation was both fascinating and energising, offering deep insights into the realities and with powerful feedback from the audience.
