Round-up: Irish Penal Reform Trust's 30 year Anniversary Event
10th April 2025
On Thursday, 10 April 2025, the Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) proudly celebrated 30 years of advocating for a just and humane Ireland, where prison is truly a last resort.
The event, held at Trinity Business School, Dublin, brought together founders, past and present Executive Directors, Board Chairs, and supporters to reflect on three decades of penal reform and discuss the path ahead.
Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan TD delivered a keynote address, recognising IPRT’s lasting impact and its steadfast commitment to fairness and dignity in the justice system. Executive Director Saoirse Brady opened the event with welcoming remarks before introducing the Minister. The first panel, chaired by Noeline Blackwell, featured early IPRT leaders Tom O’Malley, Prof Mary Rogan Prof Ian O’Donnell, and Liam Herrick. They shared insights into IPRT’s foundation, early challenges, and key milestones.
A special video message from Prof Michael O’Flaherty, Commissioner for Human Rights at the Council of Europe, preceded the second panel. Also chaired by Noeline Blackwell, it included more recent IPRT leaders—Seamus Taylor, Deirdre Malone, Fiona Ni Chinnéide, and Saoirse Brady who discussed recent challenges, ongoing work, and the future of penal reform. A lively audience Q&A followed, with both panels engaging attendees. A poignant highlight of the morning was the reading of a piece by Robert Cullen, currently in prison, ensuring that the voices of those most affected by the justice system were central to the day.
The event closed with remarks from current Board Chair Derval MacDonagh. We’re deeply grateful to all who joined us and supported our work over the years.
