HIQA has published its latest inspection report on Oberstown Children Detention Campus; the announced inspection visit was carried out from 16-18 July 2019. Out of eight standards assessed, Inspectors found that the Campus was compliant with five standards; one standard was described as ‘Substantially Compliant’; and two standards were described as ‘Non-compliant Moderate’.

For Christmas 2019, 113 prisoners will be granted varying periods of temporary release under the Criminal Justice Act 1960. This is the lowest number of people given temporary release at Christmas since 2008.

IPRT welcomes the publication of the Evaluation of the Bail Supervision Scheme for Children (pilot Scheme) by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs today (20th December 2019). The report demonstrates positive outcomes for children who participated and completed the Bail Supervision Scheme.

The case of a homeless man, suffering from brain damage, who has been held on remand for over a year in Mountjoy prison has received widespread national media attention. The case raises a number of systemic issues that IPRT draws attention to here.

The Irish Penal Reform Trust, in association with the Irish Criminal Bar Association, hosted a youth justice seminar on the 21st November 2019 in the Distillery Building, Church Street, Dublin 7.

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice and Equality held a public hearing in July 2019 on the issue of spent convictions. IPRT gave evidence as a witness in this hearing and the final report and recommendations were published in October 2019.
