The Minister for Justice has announced that she has secured Government approval to publish the Draft General Scheme of the Irish Prison Service Bill 2023. IPRT will review the Draft General Scheme of the Bill closely in the coming weeks.

IPRT welcome the publication of the April 2023 Prison Population Census reports on restricted regimes and cell occupancy and in-cell sanitation, which were published by the Irish Prison Service at the end of July.

The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (‘the Commission’) has published recommendations that equality legislation be changed to include discrimination on the ground of socio-economic status and on the ground of criminal conviction to Government as part of ongoing engagement with the Review of the Equality Acts, including the Equal Status Acts 2000-2018 and the Employment Equality Acts 1998-2015.
