Reports on Irish prisons are gathered in this section, along with prison standards and other relevant reports.

Inspection reports of the Children Detention Schools, which are carried out by HIQA, are available in the youth justice section.

Minister introduces Amendment to Prison Rules: “Meaningful Human Contact”

On 29th June 2017, Minister for Justice and Equality, Charles Flanagan TD, introduced an amendment to Rule 27 (1) of the Prison Rules 2007 to 2017.

Office of the Inspector of Prisons: ‘Deaths in Custody’ reports 2016

A number of reports on investigations into deaths occurring in prison custody in 2016 have recently been published by the Office of the Inspector of Prisons.

Census Prison Population April 2017: Cell Occupancy and In-Cell Sanitation

This report includes information on the numbers of usable cells in each institution, the number of cells that accommodated one, two, three and four or more prisoners, prisoners without access to in-cell sanitation and prisoner who were required to use toilet facilities in the presence of others.

Census of Restricted Regime Prisoners April 2017

The figures released for April 2017 have shown an upwards trend in most sectors of the report when analysed against figures in the past year. The following figures illustrate the current and past figures for those on restricted regimes.

Probation Service: Annual Report 2016

The Probation Service Annual Report for 2016 has been published. Following on from the recommendation of the Strategic Review of Penal Policy (2014), in 2016 the Probation Service introduced on a pilot basis an integrated model of Community Service. Integrated Community Service allows for up to one third of Community Service Order hours to be used to facilitate a participant's attendance at programmes and support services.

Probation Service Launch their Joint Strategy on Social Enterprise 2017-2019

The Probation Service in conjunction with the Department of Justice and Equality and the Irish Prison Service launched their strategy on social enterprise that will engage people with convictions in sustainable employment.
